Hi, I'm Abel!
Founder of Muso’s Mind Music School, piano teacher, and lifelong learner of how the brain really learns best.
Like many kids, I grew up learning classical piano the typical traditional way: exam after exam, year after year throughout my primary school years. But over time, the rigid narrow approach drained the joy out of learning music. I avoided practice. I nearly quit altogether. To this day, I’m grateful to my piano teacher for trying to reignite my passion by branching out from exam-focused lessons. It ultimately took me 2.5 years just to push through Grade 8 exam, and by the end of it the spark had almost gone out.
It wasn’t until I joined senior music in high school. I started collaborating with other musos, playing in bands exploring genres like jazz, pop, and rock, and diving into music tech. I had learned to enjoy music again, see it in a completely different light, then I realised I wasn’t just playing anymore — I was thinking musically. And loving it.
Everything changed when I started teaching piano on the side while studying neuroscience at Melbourne Uni. By day, I was learning the deep insights into the brain science behind effective meaningful learning. By night, I was helping students apply those ideas through music.
That’s when it all clicked.
How we teach music matters. When students enjoy the process, understand how they learn, and feel a sense of ownership and competence whilst knowing that the teacher has their back when needed — they don’t just stick with music, they thrive.
That’s why I created Muso’s Mind Music School, it is the studio I wish I had growing up.
Our mission is to help students develop their musical fluency properly from the start, through engaging, neuroscience-informed strategies that is designed to make learning fun and meaningful until they gain the skills to be their own muso all on their own.
It’s not just about exams. It’s about helping students grow in confidence, stay curious, and fall in love with learning through the wonderful world of music.
